How the time estimation test works

You're given a target — stop at exactly ten seconds, say. The clock runs where you can see it for a moment, then hides, and from there it's just you and your internal clock. Press stop when you believe the moment has arrived. Over three rounds the test averages how far off you were, in milliseconds — and unlike almost everything else on this site, lower is better.

This one lives in our Relax section for a reason: there's no countdown pressure and no frantic clicking. It rewards calm. Ironically, the harder you concentrate on time passing, the more it seems to stretch — which is exactly the phenomenon the test lets you feel first-hand.

Why your clock drifts

Human time perception runs on attention and arousal. Adrenaline makes seconds crawl; absorption makes hours vanish. Most people can hold an estimate within a second or so of a ten-second target, but stress, caffeine and boredom all bend the result — try the test in different moods and watch your own clock change speed. Steadying your estimate

A silent, even count — "one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand" — outperforms gut feel for nearly everyone. Breathing slowly helps too, which is no coincidence: a calm nervous system keeps time better.

Average error under a second on a ten-second target is solid; under half a second is impressively calibrated.

Is lower really better?

Yes — your score is your error, so a perfect internal clock would score zero.
